Fixing "Your book can't be printed yet" and other photobook warnings

Before you can order, the editor checks your book for anything that would print badly. There are two kinds of message.

Must fix: "Your book can't be printed yet"

  • "Your book needs a cover design": go to the cover and choose a cover layout.
  • "Your cover layout needs a photo": add a photo to the cover's photo slot.
  • "Your cover photo is too low-resolution for print": choose a sharper photo, or a cover layout with a smaller photo area.
  • "X image(s) are too low-resolution for print": the flagged photos are too small for the space they fill. Make them smaller on the page (use a layout with more photos), or swap them for higher-quality ones.
  • "X photo(s) have important content outside the frame and must be reviewed": the crop is cutting off something important, often faces. Open each flagged photo and reposition or zoom out.
  • "X photo(s) are still processing; try again shortly": recently uploaded photos aren't ready yet. Wait a few minutes and try again.
  • "Your book has X pages. You need between 30 and 200": add or remove pages.

Worth reviewing: "A few things to review before ordering"

You can still order with these, but take a look first:

  • "Your cover photo may appear soft when printed" or "X image(s) may appear soft or blurry": the resolution is borderline. It'll print, but won't be pin-sharp. Shrink or replace the photos if it matters to you.
  • "X photo(s) have content near the frame edge": check nothing important is too close to where the page is trimmed.
  • "X page(s) have no images and will be printed blank": add photos or delete those pages.

Why are some photos low-resolution?

Photos taken on a phone are nearly always fine. The usual culprits are screenshots, images saved from WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook (which shrink photos heavily), and heavily cropped pictures. If a guest has the original, ask them to upload it to your album and use that one.

"Photos in your draft were deleted"

If photos used in your book have since been deleted from the album, the draft flags them as missing. Replace those slots with other photos before ordering.

Keep important things away from the edges

Books are trimmed after printing, so a few millimetres around every page edge can be cut off, and the inner edge disappears slightly into the binding. Keep faces and text comfortably inside the page.
